1970 Elan Plus 2 Ignition Coil

PostPost by: LotusOZ » Tue May 15, 2018 10:01 pm

Hello, I am brand new to this forum so hope this isn't a silly question. I have just purchased a 1970 Plus 2S (not 130) which was about 85% restored and my father in law and I are working through the rest. He has a 3 x 60's Lotus so I have been inspired by his passion to take this on and join the team. My question is, we are replacing the ignition coil which we note in the manufacturers manual to be a Lucas LA - 12, I am based in Australia and am struggling to find this exact model, can some tell me if there is an acceptable (or better) modern equivalent please, which we may be able to source here? Thank you in advance.

HI LotusOZ and welcome to the forum - where in oz are you?

Which cars were fitted with ballast ignition system( 9V on normal running due to resistor in circuit and full voltage on start ) and which were fitted with with non ballast ignition coils is not clear as with much that is Lotus in these details. What coil you need depends on the system fitted. In Australia a non ballast resistor system is fine as we dont have the cold weather starts like in the UK or USA. So fit a normal 12 V coil - The Bosch blue is a good option and remove the ballast resistor and full voltage starting system intended for a 9V coil if fitted and just run as a 12V coil on full voltage at all times

cheers
