?lan plus 2 Clock loses Time

PostPost by: Robzildjian » Tue May 26, 2015 6:24 am

The clock in my ?lan plus 2 loses time by 5 minutes per day. Does anyone else have this problem? Can it be adjusted so it runs faster?

Advice appreciated.

Short of checking all the connections for a good 12v across the terminals, looks like a case of opening it up???

A friends +2 had a similar problem but he lost 20-30mins a day, it drove him mad for years until he cleaned all the Dash grounds and fitted a solid state voltage stabilizer which fixed it.

Does your Fuel gauge work ok? Because i remember his used to be very random.

What type is it? The Smiths clock has a +/- adjustment lever on the back.

I don't know which clock this is, but I assume it is electromechanical, not quartz. These usually (always?) have a small regulating screw. Sometimes on the back, sometimes on the front. In my limited experience, poor running is caused by a dirty switch. Its purpose is to pass power to the winding each time the balance swings past, so a poor contact will cause the balance not to get a full pulse of power. I have in the past fixed this successfully by adding a transistor to act as a driver to the winding. I imagine that Speedy cables or Speedograph Richfield offer a repair service.

The Smiths clock in my 1970 +2S would run for a bit and then stop. I got another off ebay and this one did exactly the same. Reading up on the clocks I found the best description of the faults here (the scanned document in the 5th comment):

On the one off ebay the rectifier's white plastic housing showed significant signs of melting. In the end I got the original one repaired by JDO Instruments, which took less than a week.
