1968 Elan +2 Gearbox Woes

Hi Guys,

I'm a newbie and, sadly, I'm completely clueless on mechanical matters.

My gearbox ate a few of its teeth a couple of weeks ago and my mechanic has it out and is suggesting I send it to a specialist for repair. I'm based in Dublin and he thinks it needs to go to the UK - I would be grateful for any recommendations for decent specialists as I'm finding it hard to figure out where is best?

sorry to hear about your woes
it's a ford gearbox from the 60's .. other guys here will be able to say if its same as cortina or anglia . there must be a few places local to you in dublin who have the ability to rebuild your gearbox. is it out already?

ah sorry in haste i missed u had it out already.
i'd say if u don't hear from anyone in lotus forum who has knowledge of gearbox specialist near to you , maybe your local 1960's ford car clubs might know

Hi,re your gearbox problem's I am based in Belfast with an ?lan ,had similar trouble
Last year . Depending on which gears,teeth rings etc are needed I have a couple of guys who can sort it. The gear box is quite a straight forward setup. .

If you have broken teeth finding replacement gears may be a challenge as the Lotus ratios were not the same as most cortinas or escorts. Certainly not easy to find here in Australia and also maybe a challenge in the Uk. The rest of the bits are readily available

Engine reconditioners will sometimes be able to fix gearboxes. I remember asking around a few years ago and Gosnays Engineering in Romford, Essex said they could do it, even though they are known for their engine work.

You could therefore include those in your search.

Hi,
I used BGH geartech to rebush a lay gear for me. They also said the gears are getting difficult to obtain.

Just an update - gearbox back from Alan Voight.

While it was out had most engine gaskets renewed, cleaned up and painted the block and cam-cover, replaced the dynamo with an alternator and in the process of installing all new engine mountings, suspension and associated gubbins (the mechanic is in the process!).

Also cleaned and painted the steel wheels. Made a bit of a bags of the latter tbh - but still better than before.

Hope to be back on the road next week. If the wife ever finds out the cost I will be murdered.

Thanks for all the advice.

btw - the original UK reg was ULH204F.
