clutch pipe setup modification required

PostPost by: RichC » Mon Oct 31, 2016 5:14 pm

Just been on to SJSportcars and ordered replacement clutch slave cylinder and all the bits and bobs to join master cylinder to slave. Apparently my early +2 should have been upgraded to the more modern 3 pipe setup with brackets in the 1970s ... but it never was!
Chap seemed to think I wouldn't be able to work out how to join them all together as its completely different from single pipe original setup. two brackets on bellhousing etc .. I said I'd ask the FORUM !
he seemed to believe that nobody would know ... it's troubling how little faith folk have nowadays in resourcefulness .....
How difficult could it be ? 2 pipes 1 flex hose 2 brackets?
any advice/ pictures gratefully received.

Just out of curiously, do you know when they went to the red Nylon hose?

yes mine (50/734) originally was red nylon ... which I changed to solid cupronickel abt 7 years ago .. it's only 'cos with reshelling i had to move the pipe across to the new shell and in doing so managed to crossthread the slave cylinder union due to the lack of access with the exhaust downpipes. I removed the slave cylinder and tried to redo the thread in the vice but gave up and decided to start afresh with a new slave cylinder.. that's when i found out what the proper clutch pipe setup should be!

Cheers :)

RichC, I agree, i have a 68 with 3pc set up and the clutch feels so much better than my later cars with Nylon red pipe. I thought it may just be the heat off the exhaust softening the pipe but even with insulation the 3pc setup feels better.

I fitted a continuous braided hose from the MC to the slave secured with a number of stainless rubber lined P clips around the bell housing - so much simpler and works perfectly.

Hi,
Jono is right just fit one length of braided hose.
The original was 1/4 diameter hose and bundy not 3/16 as tends to be fitted now - nothing wrong with that as fluid is better now and people don't tend to drive there cars at minus 20 degC

Steve
