Gear lever spring

During reassembly after putting the prop shaft back in, I have come to replacing the gear lever.
I think there is something wrong here.
The spring for lifting the lever into reverse seems too strong.
Has anyone got one apart to measure it for me please.
Mine is :-
Outside diameter 23mm
Length 17mm
Wire diameter 2.95mm
I don`t think it compresses at all in use and relies on the domed cover being slack to allow for the lift.
Also the cover should screw down onto a gasket. This is missing.
can you describe the material it is made from, soft cork, hard fibre or something like that. and what thickness is it please so that I can make one.
I don`t trust anything anymore.

Eric,

It happens i have a new spring ford p/n: 105E-722B floor mounted stick shift spring.
Measures: 1 11/16" L 13/16" W. Your spring seems to be too short. I have some
used springs that are about the same size if you need one. email me for picture:
