PostPost by: dunclentdr » Wed Mar 29, 2017 9:23 pm

I have a gearbox and diff that need inspection and repair/rebuild - would welcome recommendations in the UK, I am based in the Midlands.

Thanks

For your diff promotor seems to get a good write-up...

I can recommend BGH Geartec, although they are a fair distance away from you in Kent.

Brian and Chris have rebuilt and modified a couple of Elan boxes and a Type 9 for me. They will change ratios, improve oil feed and bearings to make the Elan box as strong as possible. Excellent service.

David,
Can I suggest you try Alan Voigts in Wallasey. 0151 630 3575.

They have recently done a rebuild of my diff. and I am pleased with the job and the service.
They have an Elan of their own and the son Mark is a member of Club Lotus.
The Wirral is not too far from you and is well worth a day out.

Went with Al (promotor) in the end - communications and advice have been first class and looking forwards to collecting 2 boxes and a diff.

Hi David,

Looking at the colour schemes on those boxes it seems they are 100% period correct. Do you know at what point the main box colour changed from dark green to black? (both versions are shown in your picture). Also the bell housing looks to be painted separately and is a satin rather than gloss black like the box itself - is that correct? Whoever painted those boxes seems to know the correct history.

Firstly I'd like to thank people who had faith in me and recommended me as suitable to do these jobs. It's much appreciated.

I'd also like to thank David for letting me work on his 2.5 Elan box which is a bit of a rarer treat than normal! Still looking at working out a custom bush that'll allow fitment of the large gearbox nose (17mm) into a 6 bolt crank rather than grinding the nose down on such a rare 'box.

Lastly in response to colour schemes - both boxes are green despite appearance in the photo.

We decided to go with green and satin black just because it looks nice and has a "racier" feel to it rather than deciding on it as being period correct. I'm not sure if it is exactly period correct with a black bellhousing and green gearbox. However, as I can make out it was common for gearboxes to be green until around 1968 when they went to satin black. I think it also depended on who was on the assembly line at the time!

If any one is looking for a gearbox or diff overhaul then I'm happy to discuss/advise.

Cheers.
