Help me understand the Anti-Sizzle gear lever...

PostPost by: 69S4 » Wed May 07, 2014 6:39 am

If you've got the new bits in good condition and assembled as per Alex's post it won't come undone - mine never has. The other end of the gear lever, where your decorative knob of choice sits, now that's another matter. :(

So purchasing a complete gear lever assembly from eBay shows me that indeed my original lower lever was modified, here's a photo of my original modified lever & new lever:

Note that the original lower lever is missing the step for the washer & the bottom of the bushing.

Here's a picture of the components of my old assembly [left) & replacement parts (right).

Here's everything assembled:

Only way to sort out these DPO mods was to replace everything! Things for everyone's help. :D

Phil,
Sorry for the thread resurrection, but my new Sprint arrived from its previous home with Cedric in the south of France yesterday and one of the 'nuances' that I would like to resolve is the gear lever, which has a tendency to spin around during gear change!
Where did you get the replacement bits from and which bits did you have to buy?
Thanks in advance, I am sure this is the first of many questions!!
Cheers

Check the rubber bearing first. If the outer metal is tight to the gear-lever and the inner sleeve doesn't rotate in the rubber, it's probably OK and needs tightening down ( washer on inner sleeve)

Thanks Graham,
I have just taken the tunnel housing and gearbox shroud off and the metal plate beneath this to expose the nylon cap. I have tried to tighten the nut at the base of the gear lever, but I have got it as tight as I can get it by hand and the gear stick stick rotates around this pivot point.
I guess the next step is to undo this nut and take the stick assembly off the top of the nylon cap.
Any ideas?
Thanks

"but I have got it as tight as I can get it by hand and the gear stick stick rotates around this pivot point."

If you are talking about the sleeve nut that clamps the washers & gear lever assembly to the stub of a gear lever coming out the gearbox you need to tighten it down way more than you can achieve by hand.

Yes, that's the one I was 'torquing' (couldn't resist!).
So is it a torque wrench that I need for this and if so, any idea on the kind of setting this needs to achieve?
Thanks all

Not sure of a torque number... but hand tight with a normal spanner (wrench...)

Right, I see what you mean. I think you misinterpreted me earlier, when I meant hand tight, I meant I had got it as tight as I can get it with a spanner using my own force. It is still moving around when I push it over for first say.

Not sure where to go from here.......

Do you have the lock washer fitted?

I would be concerned about stripping the threads then... the thread is quite fine.

Is the bushing OK? The bushing has an inner & outer steel sleeve with rubber in-between that should be bonded to both. I wonder if one of the bonds has failed?

The replacement part I got from JAE here in the states wasn't bonded to the outside, so would just spin!

I would try Sue Miller or Matty for a new "Gear lever bush"

I'm not sure to be honest, I only got the car yesterday and noticed the issue and thought it might be an easy fix. Where is the lock washer located?

Part 64 on:
http://rdent.com/manuals/elan/transmission/fa.htm

Sounds like you should probably remove the stick and check the bushing and if the lock washer is there.

That's a great help, I will check the lock washer and order a new one and bush if required.

Thanks all,

Now, indicators.......another thread I think.....
