Well many months later (and many side jobs) the engine is fitted back in the car. Took a quick spin around the block and successfully used 4th gear! So it seems to be confirmed that it was the missing shim in the nose housing.
Now just keep my finger's crossed that it continues to work and sort out a few issues and it should be good to go... You never know it it behaves I might be brave enough to take it for a road trip to LOG this year! (Wife/family permitting!)
