Rotoflex orientation

PostPost by: wbmoore » Fri Jul 22, 2016 3:33 pm

Hello. Putting new doughnuts on the car and am wondering if it matters which way they go ? Do the more protruding sleeves bolt to the half-shafts or Do the thinner sleeves bolt to the half-shafts.
We can't find it in the manual. Photos we find show the fat sleeve being bolted to the half-shaft and this is also how our car was when taken apart.
Always thought the doughnuts were symmetrical until I had one in hand.
Thanks for any thoughts. Brad Moore.
PS I do apologize if this has been covered.

YES IT MATTERS!!!!!

I am at the office so I don't have my notes, but I seem to recall that that higher bosses go on to the side of the intermediate shafts.

Someone else that has manual at their finger tips can chime in.

Hi Brad,
As Tony says the correct fitting is with the higher bosses in contact with the flanges of the drive shaft. This is covered in Section R.6 of the work shop manual.

Thanks guys.
In my workshop manual, the R section is Overhaul and Rebuild Instructions. Went to #6 (Assembly) and could not find any info on the ROTOFLEX joints. Also went to ''I'' section (Rear Suspension etcetera) and could not find any info on them. My manual came out when car was new.......it's a 1964.
However, is sounds like they are right way 'round.

BREAKING NEWS........ just looked in my +2 manual and there it is......... R6...... with everything we ever wanted to know about ROTOFLEX couplings.

Tony V. and Don........THANKS MUCH. This site makes owning an Elan much easier.
