Lotus Elan

Plus 2 Center Console

PostPost by: Famous Frank » Tue Mar 20, 2018 9:11 pm

Hello fellow Lotus owners.

Some of you know, but others may not but I manufacture Exact Reproduction Elan Interior Components. Over the years I've been asked if I manufactured Plus 2 Center Consoles like I do for the regular Elan. I did not. But I'm about to pull the trigger and do it. But before I actually pull that trigger and spend huge five figure money without my wife knowing, I thought I would pose the question to the forum to get something more than just my gut feeling what the market is. So the question is:

Who would be interested in purchasing an Exact Reproduction Plus 2 Center Console? Pricing would be in the area of $390 if I produced an initial run of 100. A run of 50 would put pricing in the $450 area.

And maybe one more question is does anyone know if they are all ready being produced by any other supplier?

Thank you and all the best, Frank

I'd reach out to the parts suppliers and see if they are interested if you haven't already.

They likely have a good feel for demand/market and maybe interested enough to get you a decent production run.

I purchased a tunnel shell and under dash trims from Kelvedon so I assume you are referring to the early Plus 2?

There would probably be quite a bit of interest in a Plus 2 crash pad/dash top :?

Frank

If it is the one piece console for the "early" +2, I would be interested. Either cost you quoted would be reasonable given the size of the console and the complexity inherent in producing this reproduction part. My assumption is that it will be made of similar "thickness" and texture plastic as the original.

Please post progress on this project. Thanks.

Can someone tell me approximately when the switch was made from the long early Console to the shorter one? The one I'm working on is the long one. Approximately 5 feet long. I'd love to know how many were made with the long Console. It seems like everyone I look at is cracked, split, broken, missing portions, etc. They all seem to be cracked at the very least. But then again, they are all 45 to 50 years old. They have served us well.

It will be made as the originals were. Black ABS Vacuum formed over a mold. As with the ones I sell for the two seat Elans and Europa, there will be no holes in it. I found on the two seat Elan that many people are now installing 5 and 6 speed transmissions which require the shifter hole to be in a slightly different location than the original 4 speed. As such I let the customer cut the hole for their shifter location. Even the grain will be close to the original. Not exact but close. Then again, I've looked at a huge number of Consoles and even then the grains never match exactly.

Frank,

The short console was introduced with the +2S model in March 1969.

Good luck with the project

as Robbie says......
before chassis 50/1592 (the long consol....)

chassis 50/1593 was the +2S....(so theoretically the short consol)

Frank, I am definitely interested. However from your description I believe you are referring to the early console fitted to pre-"S" models, 050 B 0243. These are largely as-formed with an upholstered pad partially covering the top. I would need a late type, 050 B 0920, as fitted to "SA" models. These are fully upholstered. I know that Rick would be looking for the same, his +2S is only a few chassis numbers away from mine, 050 0170N.

I am very interested! my 69' 50-2520 non "S" needs the early long Center Console. @theelanman, not all chassis after 50/1592 were +2 S, My car was one of the last Federal +2 (non "S") cars produced, also one of the last before "new" revised chassis numbers were implemented

Frank.... I am definitely interested in either scenario. My console is brittle and beyond repair.... Please keep us updated.

On the other hand, 50/2036 is a non-S with an October 69 date on its plate and it has the early long type. I think this might be one of those fuzzy transitional things, or the non-S stayed with the early style until the end or something.
