Tire size for a stock 1967 Elan SE/SS

PostPost by: jonbprovost » Wed Sep 26, 2018 6:04 am

I'm trying to find replacements for the original 155R13 tires for my 1967 Elan that I'm restoring. This is my 1st car purchase new in 1968 in California. There are no suspension or body modifications so the wheels are original. All input would be appreciated as I'm finding it difficult finding good information on a current size that will fit with out problems.
Thanks,
J.B.P.

165/70 13 will fit as well as 155/80 13

Not much else. Where are you located?

Oh...I see you are in CA. Try www.onlinetires.com

I have been buying tires there for a while. No financial interest in the company, just a nice selection of tires in our sizes.

Thanks for you info Tony, the 165/70/13 seems to be the one.

Hello Jon,

I have a 67 Elan SS as well. The actual original metric tire size was a 145/80-13. The 165/70-13 should fit, but you may find that certain brands may rub the spring perches in the rear. The solution is to flatten the spring perch with a knock off hammer against the spring to provide the needed clearance. I used 165/70-13 Continentals and later Bridgestones. Both required some clearance from the spring perches.

If you come out to the Lotus Corral at the CSRG Charity Challenge vintage races Oct 6-7, I should have my Elan in the Lotus Corral or the paddock on Saturday. Hope to see you there. There should be several other Elans there as well.

Regards,

Thanks Dan.
I will try to make it to the track on Sat. the 6th. Is your car stock and what color is it so I can find you, also will you be driving in a race?
Thanks again.

Hello Jon,

My Elan is yellow with Panasport wheels. Stock with very tired paint and interior. License plate "MUDFLWR". I am racing a yellow 73 Crossle 25F Formula Ford #76. We will be under a yellow and white canopy with "Zilog" on the canopy.

It's likely we will paddock in the area directly in front of the garages. The alternative spot is behind the grandstands. I'm hoping my son brings his 63 Super Seven as well. I will PM you my cell phone #.
