workshop manual woes

I am still finding my way around my s4, and this had me fooled for a bit...

position of brake master cylinder ......the master cylinder is in the right place i.e. on the right [from the driver's seat]......bleeding the brakes but the fluid level didn't go down.....
should have taken the airbox backplate off I suppose, or looked under the dash while pressing the pedals..... :oops:

are there any [or many] other misdirections in the manual?

What exactly did happen when you bled the brakes?

There is nothing to see under the dash; at least on my Elan.

You have an Elite, the process should be about the same.

If you are having a problem bleeding the brakes manually, you might consider using a pressure bleeder.

What is exactly wrong with your shop manual?

If I read the OP correctly he was probably looking at the clutch reservoir rather than the brakes.

I too find some of the pictures in the WSM to be rather.....vague...

The earlier S2 manuals are much more precise.

I would agree with Richard, probably taken the top off the clutch reservoir

correct!
it was my elan s4, not my elite s1........

the arrow in the illustration in the manual points to the ckutch resevoir, and in my ignorance........just assumed that the brake master cylinder would be on the right behind the brake pedal......

Didn't you get suspicious when seeing that the other reservoir was much bigger?

alas bill....fallibility is one of my strong points.........didn't really look under the airbox backplate......
just out of interest, looked up 'clutch' in the manual and sure enough the arrow wth the legend 'clutch resevoir' is pointing to the brake master cylinder... :shock:

so even the guy who wrote the manual got it wrong........only makes me feel slghtly better...

I looked at a crashed Elan many years ago, the larger brake cylinder had been fitted in the wrong place! Not sure this had anything to do with the crash.
