Can anyone recommend a product that is good for cleaning carburettor bodies that look a bit tired?

I have found that a stainless steel Scotch-Brite pad polishes up my Webers like nothing else. It doesn't scratch them, but rather shines them up nicely.

If they are off the car soda blast them,, just duct tape any open holes and your away :) Much safer than beadblasting as the Soda will dissolve if any finds it's way inside the carb.
