Fiberglass shop in Detroit area?

PostPost by: 0005K » Sun Jul 09, 2017 9:53 pm

I'm looking for a recommendation for someone to do the bodywork on my S4. I'm located in Oxford Michigan - north of Detroit. I had an expert fiberglass / composites shop lined up but he just lost his main body man. The previous backyard guy I had lined up had my loose body parts for many months and was never able to get to any real work. I'm considering boat fiberglass repair shops.

Look for a Corvette shop in your area, probably much easier to find.

Starting to think about fiberglass repair and paint for my S4 also. I'm in Royal Oak, Michigan. There are a couple of places I'm going to check out this week, but don't have the names handy. Will let you know. One is in Troy and one in Bloomfield Hills.

Thanks. I'll contact a Corvette Club member for a recommendation. But I was told that the Lotus gel coat system is more like a boat than the fiberglass process used on Corvettes. But if they can't do it they may know shops who can.

Thanks Bob.
I'll let you know if I find anyone. The guy I had lined up was in Redford. His shop does fiberglass front ends for Sprites etc. But he's 74 and needs to replace a guy for his normal business.

Dick, Masterworks in Madison Heights is a possibility. http://www.mwauto.com/

I stopped there today and they asked me to drive the Elan over to look over the body and discuss . I can't do that for a week or two, so not much to report now.

It's more of a Corvette shop. They seem to do great work. The guy I talked to (Dave) said it takes months which seems right for stripping, painting and curing.

There is another place in the Square Lake and Telegraph Rd area. that I'll try. They work on damaged Lotuses for Auto Europe. Don't know the name of the place yet.

I'll let you know how it goes.

In addition I'm going to check out 8 Mile Collision and Fiberglass in Farmington Hills as recommended by a Corvette Club guy, and a small shop in Brighton which will be recommended by the guy who owns Preform Resources in Redford.
Thanks again for the input. I'll let you know.

Dick, There's an article about the place in Farmington Hills that I almost forgot about. At least they have done an Elan before and the owner was happy.

Dropped it yesterday at 8 Mile Collision and Fiberglass in Farmington Hills. Tony sounds like he knows what he is doing and he successfully did one a couple of years ago.
Note: Elans are close to too narrow for a standard U-Haul car hauling rental trailer. I'll be looking for something more narrow for the return - in a few months.
