"Known as "Wet Nellie" during production, the wedge-shaped Esprit was displayed at auto shows to promote the film. After that, however, it was stored on Long Island with the locker rent paid in advance for 10 years.
When the lease expired, the tenant couldn't be found. Its contents were sold in a blind auction and a local couple reportedly acquired the sub in 1989 for less than $100. It was restored, exhibited again, and later presented for the first public offering by RM Auctions."

I was living within 50 miles of it... Talk about lost opportunity!

The 26R THAT WAS shown on the home page sold at ?112k at the same auction, but this was ?40k under the estimate ....... bargain!

Cars like this can be imported into the UK with only 5% local taxes to pay (qualify as an "antique" & not a car)

There seem to ve various figures kicking around.

I just looked at the website of the LONDON auction room that sold it and there it says:
Sold for ?616,000

So I expect pounds sterling above is the root figure & $920,000 corresponds to a dollar being worth 70p.

The "Sold for ?550,000." that I quoted above must be the BBC reporter getting his sums wrong.
