Rewire - advice on best solution

PostPost by: dunclentdr » Fri Oct 24, 2014 7:28 pm

My Plus 2 needs a new loom fitting - a leading Lotus classic specialist quoted c?1000 +VAT labour for the job - is this something I could trust to my local classic car garage or any suggestions on who might do a great job for less?!!

Thanks

David

I bought my looms for my Plus 2 from autosparks.co.uk and rewired it myself.
Never rewired a car before and everything works. Even wired the fan up so I can switch it on independently.

cheers

Ian.

David, plus one on considering trying the work yourself. :) I did mine on my own with no previous experience. At the end of the project, I am much more comfortable with how the electrical system works and very confident using the car for long distance travel.

If getting a shop to do the work, I am not sure how close to reality a quote will be. I know I made a few mistakes and hit the odd puzzler while doing the project. Mind you, I kind of customized the loom to accommodate relays on a lot of stuff, power for electronic ignition, revised cooling fan controller, electric fuel pump, better radio, etc. At any rate, I would strongly recommend using the Lotus specialist as a number of circuits in my Plus 2 did not follow the BS-AU7 standard used on most British cars of the day, the attachments on parts of the dash are a bit tricky, etc.

Best of luck with the project.
