I think the original knob type may depend on model and year.

The original knob on my 69 S4 SE DHC (Federal), that I picked up at the factory new and still have, was round (spherical) with the gear shift pattern on top, black background/silver pattern - not a Lotus logo.

one is weathered (call it patina if ulike) the other is not ?...
i have an original weathered matt finish round one with black & silver lotus emblem standard for mid '68 +2 & just acquired a NOS knob the same but gloss finish.
Do you have 'lotus police' out there ?? I'm sure neither is incorrect ..........

Hi,
Sorry about picture quality. This is my one. But being the penultimate S2/SE produced that has various S3 parts as standard, I don't know if it helps you.

My Sprint just has a spherical gear knob with the gear pattern on top in silver with a blackground and not a Lotus badge.

I wrote an article for Club Lotus News on the subject of gear knobs. Here it is.

Interesting article.

I don't know if because my car was US bound but my original 69 S4 gearshift was a "D" (Sprint type gearshift pattern in the article) not a "C" type S4 Black Lotus logo.

I remember being annoyed by this when I picked the car up at the factory. In my mind, why would I have to be constantly be reminded of the gear pattern, and there weren't going to be others driving the car except for the occasional service person who would also know the shift pattern. Much preferred the logo version but there was no discussion at the time. I didn't bring it up. Just being elated at driving my new car. A dream!
