single cable meltdown instead of mayhem!

i switched back to my 23D4 as the ignitor wasnt any better BUT I had to clean my loom up as i shorted the tach / coil circuit while talking to our neighbor which led to partial insulation meltdown (of THE WHITE CABLE!!) B U T not within the actual main core loom. only the areas which "looked out" of the loom melted. so the white cable kept cool because it was in the loom where the cable was protected by the package of internal cables at 5-8?C garage temperature - so it was 3 pairs of connectors, some new cable AND much LUCK! plus having the dash "open" i went thru some of my friends' (hes a car electrician) MAGIC and was infuriarated, as it showed way too much short cuts: which i hate. radio reception changed to 5 star!! sandy

You need be careful that the wiring loom where the white ignition wire is bundled with other wires to check it has not overheated and melted insulation there also.

When I rewired my Elan many years ago the loom to the rear of the car had melted into a solid block of plastic with multiple wire cores through a now single melted block of plastic insulation Amazingly it still worked OK but eventually the overheated and melted insulation would have cracked and then short circuits or breaks developed in the wiring.

Spot on, Rohan! The loom-bound part of the wire is more likely to melt and the wire will move inside the plastic to relieve its stress, like length expansion due to its high temperature.

I got away with it once but was shocked when I found what was behind the dashboard!
