Who is "best" for insurance in the UK?

PostPost by: Bruce Crowthorne » Tue Oct 02, 2007 3:26 pm

I am sure it has been asked before, but what is everyone's peferance on insurance companies?

Second - how much should I expect to pay? (50+ year old, garaged car, <2000 miles, full ncb - but on another car)
Thanks
Bruce

Hi Bruce

Last year I paid ?205 from Peter Best, they told me if I was to garage the +2 it would cost ?115.

I'm sure they are not the cheapest.

I did the annual rounds of the usual favourites last month, and stayed with Carole Nash (0800 298 5511).

?115.20 inc. legal and recovery for <2000 miles, agreed value of ?16k and an accepted list of 24 non-standard modifications.
The car is garaged, and there is a ?100 excess.

I am now at the stage where normal car insurance increases with age.

Brian
As an aside (not trying to hijack the thread) what is your list of 24 non standard mods?

Oooh can I join in please?

The 24 modifications carried out also interest me.
Whilst on this subject what experience do others with Zetec (or other alternative engines) powered Elans have with insurance.
I'm paying just over ?300 with Footman James with no mileage limit.
I could live with alimit of 2000 miles / annum but they wont do it, calling my Elan a specialised vehicle. :(

Cheers

Hey Brian, I look at your Sprint as the benchmark of "standardness" - so spill the beans - what's in the list.
I just said min was standard.
Quotes I am getting are about ?120 upwards for 2 or 3000 miles depending on the broker.
Only awkward one is Lancaster - they a faffing about referring to underwriters - three phone calls so far and still no quote!

In reaction to advice in a previous thread on this subject, I decided to make a list of the known modifications made to the car ? never mind how small or minor I thought they may be.
This was emailed to the insurers together with the agreed value application ? and formal acceptance, in writing, was required by me before completing the insurance policy payment.

Insurance companies are adept at playing by the rules and expect you to declare all ?relevant? information. A case in point would be a recent press article on a guy who claimed on his Critical Illness Policy when he was diagnosed with cancer to be told he didn?t qualify as his policy was void because he had not declared a minor operation some years earlier for a completely unrelated issue.
IMHO if the insurance company was as honest as it portrayed itself, it would have checked the medical records as a condition of the policy and not just as a condition of the claim. I know this has no connection with motor insurance, but the insurance industry principle is universal.

To answer the questions, below is the detailed list of what I supplied to Carole Nash and Towergate Hall & Clarke (no commection), who were the two companies I short listed.

Looking at the list I now notice three mods missing:- engine mounts are TTR uprated versions and not standard Ford issue, both wiper and window motors are now operated via relays to protect the potentially fragile switches from high induction loads.

1972 Lotus Elan Sprint ? List of known modifications from standard

1. Body modified from fixed head coupe to drop head coupe.
2. Body colour scheme changed from Tawny/White to Red/White.
3. Replacement Spyder chassis as replacement for corroded original Lotus chassis. (Safety)
4. Replacement Spyder upper and lower tubular front wishbones fitted ILO standard pressed wishbones (Safety)
5. Fully adjustable front shock absorbers.
6. Replacement front suspension springs.
7. Roll-over and side impact bars fitted. (Safety)
8. Manual fire extinguisher for engine & boot compartments. (Safety)
9. Driver and passenger door mirrors fitted. (Safety)
10. 10 inch ventilated front discs and modern Teves single pot fist callipers fitted ILO solid discs and Girling callipers. (Safety)
11. Stainless steel braided fuel and brake hoses. (Safety)
12. Occasional use of 5x13 alloy wheels and 165x13 tyres ILO 4.5x13 steel wheels and 145x13 tyres. (Safety)
13. CV joint solid drive shafts ILO rubber couplings. (Safety & Reliability)
14. Halogen headlamps ILO sealed beam lamps. (Safety & Reliability)
15. Electric headlamp lifters ILO vacuum actuation. (Safety & Reliability)
16. Headlamp vacuum actuation switch replaced by hazard warning switch and electric circuits modified to suit. (Safety)
17. Engine cylinder head ?gas-flowed? and converted for unleaded fuel.
18. Alternator fitted ILO dynamo. (Reliability)
19. Geared pre-engaged starter motor ILO standard inertia motor. (Reliability)
20. Electronic ignition & dry cell coil ILO contact points, capacitor & wet coil. (Reliability)
21. Non-original 26R type steering wheel. (Original wheel broken)
22. Full width radiator and multi-blade electric fan fitted ILO standard small radiator and four blade fan. (Reliability)
23. Electric fuel pump ILO mechanical fuel pump. (Reliability) DUE LATE 2007
24. Aluminium fuel tank ILO original steel tank. (Reliability) DUE LATE 2007

This may appear a little OTT, but at least it is does have the appearance of being honest and true.

Thanks a lot for taking the trouble Brian.
The things in your list relate also to my car.
I think it may be the name Zetec & 2000cc instead of 1558cc that is costing me all of the extra ?'s & basically taking me (in their opinion) out of the "Historic" into "Special vehicle" catagory.
