Ceramic coating of exhaust manifold

PostPost by: ecamiel » Tue Nov 06, 2018 1:14 pm

I applied silver Jet Hot over 20 years ago to used TTR big bore race headers and it greatly reduced temperatures. After many years some tiny rust spots and discoloration came thru so I eventually applied some spray can header coat just for looks. I had to replace the collector after it ground thru on the pavement. The replacement uncoated collector failed fairly quickly.

I've just had a quote, out of interest, from Hot -Jet.
In ultra extreme , satin black , the three piece TTR race exhaust and 2 to one collector is $425.
How much was the zircotec quote?
It may be worth looking into the postage to the States. Maybe a job lot?
If it's going out and coming back I'm not sure that a service attracts the same import duties??(to be checked)

I had mine done by Camcoat in the UK - ?185. This was onto new custom made stainless headers.

15k miles later and they are still as good as new - it does make a very marked difference.

I used JetHot "Classic Polish" on the TTR headers on my Elan race car. I could not be more pleased. After over two years of hard racing service, they still look great. I highly recommend.

I'm pondering with the idea of sending the manifolds to the States for this.
Does anyone know what the excise duty/VAT levy is likely to be on the return of manifolds to the UK. It's whether a 'service' commands a fee (probably does). The return of my own goods doesn't command a fee in accordance with their original value, it's whether the coating service attracts a fee?
Zircotec want ?551+VAT
Jet-Hot quote $425. Postage would be in the order of ?40 each way.

Some additional data on Jet-Hot for your information:

1. I have the Extreme 1300 on my TTR big bore racing exhaust manifold and collector. Good for temps up to 1250 deg F. I figured this would be good for my high performance street Elan (181 hp). Cost was $USD 280. Didn't see the need for the more expensive Ultra Extreme 2500. Maybe if it was a race car running flat out for extended periods.
2. The quote for the Extreme 2500 was $440 (similar to your $425 quote) vs $280 (1300 Extreme)
3. Comparing the spec sheets for the 1300 and 2500 I get the impression that the 1300 application is inside and outside. The 2500 indicates "line of sight" coverage.

I've no vested interest but I am genuinely curious as to why members would overlook a UK supply and pay twice the price to get this done in the US?

As posted previously I've tested the UK applied system over 15,000 miles and it's been brilliant and is now just as good as the day it was applied!

Perhaps I simply didn't pay enough?

So, on the quotes it's about ?690 in the UK , and about ?410 in the US without excise duties, if any payable, hence the question.
With respect, even my poor maths does not make that twice the price in the US.

Sorry Jono, I can see your previous post, however, I have experience with Zircotec and not with the company you have used, so was trying to compare with what I knew.
I take onboard the success you've had and will look at the 'cheaper' option :)

Thought I’d resurrect this thread to see if there have been any newer coatings or companies. My manifold is stainless but looks to have mild steel flanges and doesn’t look particularly good so I’m thinking of getting it coated.
Suggestions on latest products and companies welcome plus what colour do people think wears best.
White would seem good from a heat radiation viewpoint but does it get dirty and stained quickly?
Black probably hides and marks the best, is silver an option?
All thoughts welcome, I know colour is a personal choice so I’m after the practicalities of the various colours.

these could be of 304 (316 is more resistant to corrosion), some stainless do rust a bit

I doubt mild steel flanges would be welded on headers, that would be more of a hack or a quick fix than a fabrication : you may check if a magnet is strongly attracted to the flanges (a lot more than to the tubes), then they are made of mild steel.

I have used black zirotec on the race manifold.
I still think zircotec is hard to beat, despite the cost over alternatives. The problem from the aesthetics point of view is that it is a rough finish which does scuff a little. Not enough to put me off using it again.
The heat management side of things appears very good.
