Did that drive around Hawkes about 17 years ago in a rental car unfortunately, the scenery & roads were incredible.

I too suspect "carbon on the valves!" (for those of you old enough to remember the movie quote).

Nowadays, they make these thingies which, combined with some nifty chemicals, are supposed to clean them up pretty well without taking anything apart. Which might be worth a try if you're not interested in a winter bout with shipwright's disease.

I do agree it's time to start saving your pennies. But only impending ring failure is likely to cost you more if you hold off than if you dive in now, and there's no strong evidence of that.
