Engine and gearbox removal

PostPost by: diablo » Thu Apr 17, 2014 11:21 am

Hello
I have to take off the engine and gaearbox as a unit from my S4 ; I have denuded the engine of the head and all it ancillaries , but I don't see how to remove it as a unit with the gearbox because I don't find the connection between the rear of the gearbox and the final drive . The shop manual tell only to take of the rear gearbox mountings on the frame , but what about gearbox and final drive ?
Thank for your help

the propshaft slides out of the gearbox when you remove the assembly.
Don't forget to drain the oil from the gearbox

The gearbox has:
- just one mounting
- A reverse light switch
- The gearstick
- Speedo cable
- Propshaft
to remove or undo.

The prop shaft has a siding spline so will just slide out - But make sure that you have emptied the gearbox oil first!

You may find it easier to remove the engine and gearbox separately.

Thank you for these infos
A friend of mine who worked on Ford told me the same about the connection gearbox/rear drive .
I think in previous posts , I read it was easiest to remove engine and gearbox as a unit ???
Concerning my crankshaft , the big ends are at .010 , but the main shaft bearing are at .030 ( which is the last repair dim for the Lotus manuel ) is there a possibility to have one more size ?

maybe your bearings are in tolerance and can be polished.
Be careful to fit Vandervell Shells or QED good quality and not Cortina shells

As Alan says there is no need to regrind if they are within tolerance.

Measure North-South and East - West.

Depending on what you find, you could have them professionally polished, do it yourself I use a strip of fine wet n dry (using light oil), or you might not need to do anything.
