Oil filter

PostPost by: chrisbeck » Tue Jun 19, 2018 11:47 am

I've just done an annual oil and filter change (only 1,300 miles) and for the second time fitted a Fram PH2870A filter. I can't recall where I picked up that this was a suitable filter when I bought a couple. The old posting below has now got me worried, do the internal by-pass and drain-back valves negatively affect the performance of the filter on a twincam?
Should I be concerned and change it for a PH966B or Mann W712?

Chris

I received the below reply when I asked Fram for the difference
between the long, and short filter. Would anyone like to comment
about the use of the PH2870A on all Twin cam engines?

Mr. Cusworth:

Thank you for the e-mail regarding the difference between the Fram
PH2870A and PH966B oil filters. We welcome the
opportunity to be of service.

The PH2870A and PH966B have the same 2.98" outside diameter and 3/4"-
16 thread size. The PH2870A is 4.92" tall and the
PH966B is 3.36" tall for a difference in height of 1.56". The
PH2870A has an internal pressure relief by-pass valve and
an anti drain back valve feature. The PH966B does not contain these
features. Because of the by-pass valve and anti
drain back valve differences, the PH966B is not considered to be
compatible with the PH2870A.

Thank you for your interest in Fram filters.

Cordially,

I have put more than 100,000 miles on the TwinCam in my +2 using the FRAM PH2870A, never a problem.

Anti drain back valve in the Elan filter is not a needed feature as the filter does not drain itself but its presence does not cause an issue. A by pass valve in the filter is also not a needed feature and was not included in the original filter design used but its presence does not cause a problem and will only every will operate if the filter is badly fouled which it should never be if you change the oil regularly. if it does operate your oil is badly contaminated and by passing partially the filter at that stage means no additional problems as you have already enough problems due to the old oil by then :(

cheers

FYI: I have a few leftover oil filters from 1988 and 1998 as noted on the boxes of filters.

An inquiring mind wants to know:

Should I Donate the Fram's because of the construction issues?

Are the other filters or Fram still safe to use and no old filter bits will go into the oil and cause havoc?

I've read many forums and if the media wasn't exposed to moisture and no rust (except a slight rust spot here or there?) you're OK. Plus some avid Elite and Longtime MG parts distributor said Don't Worry be Happy!

Would you use them?

Because I'm paranoid, I bought some New Fancy Synthetic Oil Filters - NAPA PFL 41393 (onsale now $8.99/ reg $11.99) (equivalent to Wix filter 51393XP). Two Days of research!

Look Below for Pics of the various filters I own...I won't run out too soon! Probably have them thirty years from now!

Enjoy!
