Oil suction pipe?

PostPost by: vincereynard » Thu Jun 15, 2017 12:02 pm

Does anyone have a good S/H oil delivery pipe for sale?

Some gibbon has been at mine with a mole grip and its a bit scarred. I'm reluctant to spend yet another ?50 on a simple pipe and springy bit.

I have seen ones that look a lot worse happily inside engines.

I was not aware you can buy them new again. But then, I build engines that mainly use the earlier blocks with the screw in pickups as these suit a baffled sump better and are easier to set up to go into the middle not on the right hand side of the sump

At the recent lotus national meeting, a guy in an Elan with a very expensive new big horsepower "steel" engine got to the first set of 180 degree right hand corners on the track and lost oil pressure so he pulled out of the rest of the track day. The last I saw he was planning to talk to his engine builder about what was wrong with the sump baffling in this expensive engine of his.

If he had bothered to ask I could have told him exactly what he needs and his options in terms of oil pressure management in a twin cam on that specific corner

cheers

They are available from the usual suspects.

Cheaper at some other sources but still ?50 + after the extras.

If I cannot find a better S/H one that's where this is going as well. There is no significant reduction in cross sectional area so it should be fine.
If fact I've almost talked myself in to not bothering! :)

I thought it was possible to get a swinging input pipe? Then, with a horizontal baffle, oil surge would not matter?

Hi Vince

That's much better than mine it has been removed with mole grips without crushing then replaced with using Permatex 815 gasket maker. Been good over 31 years just a swine to remove. :(

It's exactly the same as a standard Mk2 Cortina engine oil pickup. You will probably pick it up quite cheaply from a Ford wrecker.

I think I have a good one in my spares box, I ll take a look over the weekend. Agree with above, though, I ve seen lots of 'mole gripped' ones in service.

Can't see anything wrong with it.

If it is really flat hammer an appropriate bit of round stuff up the middle.

The only bit that needs to look pretty is the bit that goes into the block.

Thanks for the replies chaps. The image shows it's best side!

The overall flow will not be effected it is just a bit oval in the middle. I had considered heating it a bit and tapping a suitable rod down but a/ I haven't got one and b/ there is always the risk of making it worse!

As it is mainly aesthetics I'll just fit it and get on with it!
