Strobe missing

I am currently fitting the distributor to my +2. I adjusted the timing to 10 degrees static. The distributor is a 23D with new advance springs, and all seems to be working ok. With the engine on idle The strobe was flashing regularly on plug lead number 1. I then moved the strobe pick up to the other leads to check if they were all regular. There was no strobe flash or rpm signal( the strobe has a rpm feature) on plug number 2 lead. I pulled the plug lead off of the plug and the revs dropped and the idle became lumpy. I changed the plug, no difference. I changed the plug cap and leads, no difference. I changed the distributor for one with Aldon ignitor ignition, no difference. Still no signal on number 2 plug lead, although the cylinder appears to be firing ok at all times. I think there must be a fault of some kind as the other three leads all give a signal to fire the strobe. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions. I may be missing something obvious,
Thanks,
Mick

Sounds like a defective plug lead or connection at the dizzy cap. .
Do you have : carbon type resistor plug leads and/ or Dizzy cap with little screws inside the cap that pierce the insulation.
Remove the screw holding #2 lead, pull that lead from the cap. cut off the tip of the lead, usually right where the old puncture mark is. Re-insert the lead into the cap and install the screw to pierce the lead. Reinstall cap and test again.
You can also test each lead including the plug end connector and dizzy cap connection with your Ohm meter. The values will be quite high but all should be in the same range.
Best leads to use on this type of cap will be original non-resistor metal or new resistor type which is wire wound around a fiberglass core. This is sometimes problematic to get good connections in the cap, so again check w/ your ohm meter.

Its probably also a weak inductive pick up on the timing light, my one has the carbon broken into two pi?ces and sometimes it wont trigger, often moving it from number one plug to number 4 plug does the trick.
back in the day when I used to do lots of engine tuning, that is tune ups not race tuning I would often get the problem it was usually a closed down, clagged up or fouled plug, the smaller the gap the less the secondary HT voltage to jump the gap, the same with a fouled plug, the pick up needs a certain threshold high voltage to trigger the strobe.
