1969 Elan S4SE DHC for sale

After ten years my Elan needs to find a new home, With just three previous owners it comes with a comprehensive history log dating back to 1974. Although outwardly original in appearance it has been mechanically upgraded with engine, cooling and transmission components whilst retaining the original character to make a reliable and practical classic with potential for long-distance touring in modern traffic conditions.

In 1981, having registered just less 60k miles, the second owner took the Elan off the road to perform a full renovation; the odometer was reset at this point (fully documented in all MOT certificates retained between 1977 to the present day). A new Lotus chassis was fitted after being treated to several coats of zinc primer then black enamel; the body shell was also re-sprayed in Lotus Yellow. Both of these major components have remained in immaculate condition since then having completed only dry miles and been winter stored. The engine was also fitted with a gas flowed Sprint specification cylinder head with the corresponding 'D-type' cams, big valves and Weber DCOEs Type 31.

In the late 1990s the previous owner had the interior trim professionally renovated by Mick Miller to match the overall standard of the car, this included a new dashboard and switches, seats re-upholstered, new carpets and the fitting of a Safety Devices roll-over and side intrusion cage.

Between 2006 and 2012 I carried out the following improvements;

Cylinder head ? machining carried out by QED Motorsports Ltd. fitting new Colsibro guides, seats cut, face skimmed. All new valves, springs, followers and cam bearings. The head was fitted with the cam shafts fully timed and valves shimmed within tolerance.

Engine bottom end ? fully dismantled, cleaned and inspected. Bores, honed and deck skimmed. Crank journals polished. New piston rings. New bearing shells fitted throughout. New oil pump. New timing chain and tensioner.

Ignition ? Bestek electronic ignition and uprated coil with new 45D distributor. Magnecor 8MM ignition lead set. Wosp 45A alternator conversion and Wosp hi-torque starter motor.

Cooling - Burton Power cassette water pump housing fitted with new timing covers. Wide 3 core radiator fitted with Pacet cooling fan and Revotec electronic thermostat for more effective cooling.

Transmission ? Voights 5 speed conversion incorporating Ford Type 9 gearbox with BGH Geartech E2 long first gear upgrade. This closely matches the original ratios with the benefit of a 5th cruising gear. Differential overhauled, new oil seals. Mick Miller CV driveshaft conversion with Kelvedon Motors limited droop rear struts and Superflex polyurethane rear suspension bushes.

The fuel tank has been replaced with a hand-made aluminium unit by Axminster Specialist Panels. The original radio has been renovated and converted to FM usage without altering the external appearance.

Fittings include a quality mohair hood.

Last year, a matching pair Dellorto DHLA 40E carburettors were sourced, renovated and jetted to Sprint specification, providing better balance and cleaner running with improved mpg. These can be interchanged with the retained Weber DCOEs if preference dictates.

?25,000

The car is in the Manchester area. PM me for any inspection, trial or for further details.

Regards,

Bob

I agree
If I hadn't just bought the S4 Fixed head I would have been over to see this in a shot.
Good luck with the sale
