Elan +2 that went missing in 1977

PostPost by: sean22 » Fri Nov 06, 2015 3:04 pm

Before i submitted the v888 i spoke to DVLA and was told that JLB 888k was on the system but the lady i spoke to could only see lots of numbers that made no sense to her ,i shall have to wait and see what comes back.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

I also remember probably about 15 years ago i had a go at trying to find out what happened to JLB888K
at the time i had the log book and i posted the chassis number and engine number on several car history type websites .I stumbled across one of these posts a couple of years ago but no matter how i search i cant find anything now ,not sure if i am just rubbish at searching the net or have these site gone?

Hi Sean

I presume you have found all the stuff relating to the +2 JLB885K that recently sold.

Reg Number:JLB885K
Chassis Number:7108120445L
Engine Number:P24898Cc:1558
Body Colour: WhiteTrim Colour:Black -

See more at: http://www.classic-auctions.com/Auction ... tfYGf.dpuf

This is very likely one car newer than yours..... you could give this chassis number to the lady at DVLA and ask if the numbers she had in front of her are similar..

Good luck

I have spent quite a lot of time following up the JLB885K connection, going through a guy at Lotus He confirmed that it was sold by Len Street Motors so 888k must have been sold by them around the same time.
I cant find any info on Len Street so i am assuming they have gone, the guy at Lotus seems to have run out of patience with me which is a bit frustrating because as far as i can tell they have the info on all cars sold by Len Street and i would have thought knowing the colour and trim type it would be possible to find the VIN for us.
Anyone got any ideas ?

Sean

I have records for only 10 cars in the 04## VIN series. However, they cover the May to August period of that year, during which the registration letter changed from J to K on 1 Aug. As a result of course, many new cars tended to be registered on that date or shortly thereafter, so the new owner could keep his car 'up to date'.

The chances are therefore that your fathers car was registered during August 1971. Cars in the 05## series were also registered in that month too. Oddly (and we have discussed this elsewhere before) many of the first 60 odd cars in the 05## series are marked up as 710000 for their month and batch serials on the VIN, so don't be surprised if and when you find the car this is what the VIN states. By 0574 the date and batch nos were back in and that unit number was made in August.

Good luck.

The search came to a halt when we couldn't find the log book seems until i get the chassis number i have nothing to go on .I have searched my parents house top to bottom but no joy they are moving house later this year so i am hopeful it will turn up then.

Yes we have photos of the car showing the Reg JLB888k But unfortunately i cant get anywhere with DVLA without the chassis number ,I contacted Lotus but they record everything by chassis number .Lotus have recorded that it was stolen on their database but only logged by its reg at the time of theft.
