Plus 2 S front screen fitting

PostPost by: andywatts » Mon Nov 19, 2018 8:10 pm

I naively assembled my repainted Plus 2 S (50/2054) with the old screen rubber and the screen, thinking I should fit the trim later. This is the type with the rubber seal (I understand it came from the Consul Classic) with the broad stainless steel trim strips in 3 pieces (with joiners middle of top and at the bottom corners).

Before using too much force I'm going to source a new rubber, and a similar part is re-manufactured in Australia and stocked by the Consul owners club.

A few questions:-
- has anyone used the Consul owners club rubber seal (and did it work)?
- any advice on fitting the screen? At the NEC exhibition recently a Zephyr owner with the same system said he had assembled the trim and rubber, and then fitted the screen from the inside of the car using string to ease the rubber over the glass. Sounds terrifying unless the rubber is really soft.
- finally ..... My car originally had steel clips which fitted inside the trim at each bottom corner of the screen. The steel is long since no more! I don't think they are available. Can anyone describe them so I can try to make something up?

Any advice gratefully received.

Hi Andy,

You have the best version of the screen trim in my opinion :D

Do you mean this piece?:

Robbie

That is for the bonded Screen so wrong part
I had a 1970+2S with the metal Stainless Trim the best.
I also understand fit Rubber and Trim to Screen first. Then fit the Assembly to Body with String

Thanks Both. The part from Paul Matty's site looks very much like the correct corner piece. Originally there was a clip which fitted within this and provided an anchor within the seal. Steel originally and literally dust when I dismantled. But not too difficult to remake with a bit of luck!

Alan - thanks for confirmation of how to assemble. I think I'll try to source a new softer seal and then have a go - I may call in a 'specialist vintage' screen fitter if it gets too scary.

I've managed to make Clips in Stainless in the past for the Trim along the sides under the Doors + attached with Stainless Pop Rivets.
good luck

Hi Andy
Just to make sure that you Elan guys get it correct the screen is the same as the Consul Capri (62- 64). The Ford Consul Classic uses a different screen and seal which is 2" taller than the Capri and Elan. The corner clips are a sort claw. They went deep into the seal. There is provision for these on the new seals.
The bottom chrome is the same on the Classic and Capri.
Here is a photo of how it should be done.

As the Zephyr man said do it with all chrome assembled. It is worth marking the centre top and bottom and using masking tape (not under the seal) to keep it all in line. You will also need a good friend to help. Watch out this can be divorce material. ha ha.

Nice to see the Photo and thanks for the info.
Just a small thing i thought with the String you start at the Bottom and not the Top.
If you start at the Top you are fighting against the Weight of the Screen trying to fall down :?

Alan, I follow your logic, but I will say that these guys put in more screens than most. This shot is from the Capri being made in the factory.

Yes for sure they are the Experts. Maybe it's easier to start from the Top because of the Dashboard + the String stays in the Rubber Seal better.
