Writing on the roof

PostPost by: Stayatmine » Tue Oct 09, 2018 11:54 pm

Hello all I'm new to the elan world and new to the forum my name is Shaun. And I've been going great guns restoring my 130/5 plus 2.
I've been wondering if any one has an idea what the strange writing on the roof in black pen is that I revealed when I removed my head lining.
From what i can work out it reads
RACE
ABLEY
ARMES
9BB

Any ideas would be very enlightening
Cheers

in the late 1980's I was given a tour of the Lotus production facility, it seemed to be common practice to let employees sign their work. I saw Esprit's and Excel's going down the line with 'Rambo', 'Splitz' and 'the Norfolk Cowboy' written on them.

I had a JPS Europa (one of the limited editions) which was less than a decade old at the time. When the car was being painted at the factory a guy called Tony decided to dip his finger in the still wet primer on the roof and write his name, so if you looked at roof years later you could make out his name... Quality Control? I don't think so.

Thanks for the replys you chaps. I love the idea of the workers graffitiing the new cars as they pass down the production line. It's a shame it's now covered up by the head lining so it's just a story to tell at least I got a picture of it and the production number on the rear. Next to the harder than steel yellow breather lines that shrunk and pulled the old head liner down :x

I have collected a variety of graffiti on the interior of my car.. Some of it relates to repairs that should have been done (and weren't), some is probably initials - see the monogrammed piece Perhaps this should be a rogues gallery..

My friend Bob has 'Chelsea for the FA Cup' carved into the wet gelcoat on the inside of the door on his 1970 S4 DHC.

I can't find the picture, but I once saw an Elise with all kinds of stuff about it being he 'final federal Elise' scrawled on the underside of the boot-lid.
