What kind of mileage does a full-race Twin Cam get ? I'm trying to figure out a fuel cell size. Thanks.

it depends on the track but about 2 km per litre is what mine gets on the track. I use a 30 litre fuel cell which is plenty for the maximum length of races here.

cheers
Rohan

I don't have any experience of race engine fuel consumption but that seems like a heck of a lot of fuel. A typical modern 600-700HP B double truck hauling 70 tonnes of freight returns a similar fuel consumption!

Not in terms of mileage but time, my friend's 3.8l E-type (not full out prepared, say rally level) needs between 40 and 50l per racing hour, an other friend told me his Cheetah can use 60 to 80 l/h depending on enthusiasm...

all that without trailer.

Hi,
a 30 litre tank will hold enough to last a 40 minute race - I don't have experience for the 60 minute Classic K but my guess is you would need a bigger tank.

40 l does me for a 1hr race which is normally under 80 miles ( there's pit stop to take into acccount). So, Rohan's rule of thumb would allow some margin. But if it's a particularly hard fought race the fuel warming light will be coming on by the end.

Thanks guys. That was a fun exercise. Kms/liter to miles/gallon to gallons/lap to laps/session to gallons/session to gallons/cell. Now I have to figure the shape and weight of the cell.

In the video below the driver mentions a 100 liter cell. Check it out.

Thanks for the input. Brad Moore.

Different race tracks had different amounts of fuel required. The amount of time spent at WOT usually made the difference. The old Riverside Raceway track was a real fuel guzzler, especially when using the long course. The amount of time spent at WOT, and at maximum rpm, was huge from turns 8 to 9, and 9 to 6. More slow turns, on and off the throttle, used increased mileage fuel wise. Never tried to compute mileage per gallon. Used pounds of fuel consumed.
