When you say "black badge" do you mean that the Lotus emblem on the nose of the car is black and silver? - If so have a search through the archives as there's been much discussion about what these mean. It appears that they were first introduced following Jim Clark's death. They may have also been re-introduced following Colin Chapman's death.

It was introduced by Lotus as an alternative to the usual Green Yellow Badge as a tribute to Jim Clark who died in a Formula 2 racing accident at the Hockenheim Ring in Germany.
If you can do a search in the Archives on here you will be able to find more detailed information.

Hi,

The lotus black badge is an urban legend. It may have been a tribute to Jim Clark, (I don't know) but there are cases of new cars fitted with black badges when Jim Clark was still alive. Also the lotus marketing manager at the time said the purchasing dept, probably just bought a batch cheaper than the green/yellow ones!

mike kimberley (ex lotus CEO) answered this question the other week
when he worked with colin chapman.....colin told him that the black badge was done as a tribite to jim clark......however they found that this badge suited some colours better than the green and yellow version so it was decided to run with both colour badges.......
the only 'special' being the one the factory did as a tribute to ACBC....and that was the black and gold........
