What number is a Lotus Seven?: 7
HI ,

My name is Anton and i am from Belgium .
I have a Elan+2s 130/5 .

With every rotation of the back wheel (side passenger) i hear a ticking sound , just like somebody is soft knocking with a hamer on the breakdisk .
I took the rim of and also the complete break system . i jack the car up at the back , start the engine , put it in first gear , let the back wheels spin and there it is . tik tik tik tik !!

Anny Suggestions ?

Sorry for my poor Englisch , but i am from the other side of the world .

Thanks .

Wheel bearings when damaged or worn make that "ticking" noise.
In your case it can't be much else because you've removed most other parts.
A Gear Tooth missing from the Crownwheel in the Back Axle would also make a loud "tick" each revolution.

Good luck
John

While you have the car jacked up, can you (or an assistant) hear whether the noise is coming from the hub area or the differential area or perhaps the rear UJ in the propshaft? If you can listen and find out more accurately where the noise is coming from that will help a lot in identifying it.

A brake caliper piston touching the disk can create this noise.

Regards,
Stuart.

Anton, are you still useing the rubber couplings (doughnuts)? or has the car been converted to CV or UJ type drive shafts? check the drive shafts as the rubber couplings degrade with time and use, also check the bolts are tight and if you have CV drive shafts check all bolts for tightness.....and the other side of the world is OZ

There are no brake calipers on the car and the noise is comming from the hub area . I can feel it ticking when i hold my hand to the break disc

PS the car still has the rotoflexes on

Hi Anton,
You're jacking up an Elan without (is it break or brake) calipers, starting a running engine and then putting the car in gear to feel the rotors turning with your hand?
Safety Begone.
How do you get in and out of the car without it tipping over?

What happens if you put the brake calipers back on along with the wheels, lower it down off the jack and drive it, do you still hear the ticking?

Eric

ps; Your country, is on the other side of what world?

Hey Guys let's not make things complicated.
Anton explained initially that his English is not good so playing word games is not helping.
Any of you speak Flemish maybe?
I'm sure that our other French & Italian contributors appreciate the problem.

Nix für ungut
John

My advice would be to refit the wheel and try rocking it top to bottom and side to side, if any play is detected get a helper to rock the wheel and check where the play is, if there is movement it could indicate a wheel bearing problem or in extreme cases the bearing could be moving in the hub.
I would still check all the bolts including the prop shaft flange bolts and also the nut on the end if the outer drive shaft (centre of hub)

That is good to know; problem resolved.
I really don't understand what you did:-
"took it all out of the back"
but it doesn't matter, the main thing is, you do & the tick has gone.
Have a good Weekend.
John

I took all out , meaning the Brake pads , Rotoflexes , drive shafts , springs ...

So the noise is gone ... for the moment .

I think the rotofexes are so worn out that the bolts are hitting against the disk .
Also the bairings are in poor condition .

Now taking off the hubs and changing the barings + new rotoflexes

Thanks a lot .

Anton from Belgium , now i take a break !!
