this happens only when light switch is in sidelight position and and when i rev the engine !
last thing we did was adjust regulator & cutout to specification .
As it seems this happens only when revving (charging ) i am assuming the two are isn someway linked .

seems that once you fix one thing .....

Is it likely that the headlamp flasher relay is at fault ? or maybe it's a bad earth on sidelights feeding back somehow thru relay ?

May seem to be a weird thing to try but try unplugging all the relays and plugging them back in again. I sometimes get a similar problem with my dipped headlight relay and it sits there buzzing on an off till I unplug and reset. Just a thought

forgot to mention that the problem seems to have disappeared as if by magic ! I supect the disconnecting did the trick.

Happens fairly regularly on mine, and having studied the wiring diagrams countless times I can not see any reason for it to happen even with a short as it would require either a capacitor or flasher unit somewhere in the circuit, but there is no denying it does happen LOL

The circuit was designed to have the lamps flashing if they were raised without being swithched on - for overtaking on the continent. Not all Elans were wired this way - from memory it required a second microswitch behind the vac knob and a flasher relay.

If a relay earth is poor the points will not shut properly this can also be the switch or the relay but being a fibreglass car that were i would start if I did not have or know how to use a multimeter.

The fun bit here is that the points do shut and then immediately open as if the contacts opening is shutting off the power to the coil, however, they are not latch on relays or similar. Tis one of life's little mysteries like if you weigh yourself and then go number two and weigh yourself again more often than not the scales will show you have gained weight despite having relieved yourself of some.

Not legal in the UK but it's only a flashing relay missing - I fitted it to my car once. It would be a great idea if the headlights came up quicker. I found I was usually past the other car by the time the headlights had started flashing...

Have thought about wiring the front driving lights / fogs to an addition relay linked to the flasher switch on the stalk or the sidelights to give a flash ability but doubt it would be legal

Andy that's how I wired mine on my dash redo.

I got a replacement column switch from eBay from a Spitfire. The replacement has a second switch for a different function. Had to modify the switch contacts to work correctly. Pull the modified stock towards the wheel and it will flash the driving lamps. There are several models of Spitfire stock switches, so you have to get the correct one, but it is a pretty straightforward mod. Wired the driving lamps to be on only on high beam with dash switch on.

Not sure on the legal issues in the UK, but most moderns have a similar feature connected to the high beam, so figure it's OK here.

Well what gave me the idea was when I took my stalk switch apart to clean it I found it had the flash contacts in place awaiting wiring just not got around to it yet
