Elan Steering wheel

I am nearing the completion (finally) of an early coupe. The car had an
after market steering wheel, which is OK, but the hub is terrible. It
does not meet up to the steering column, and is about three inches
deep, which puts the wheel pretty close.
Is there a good alternative? Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks,
Brian

Try Moto Lita, these were a period accessory, much better quality than
the cheap plastic original fitted by Lotus. They are still in hand made
production.

Cheers,
Pete (with Moto Lita woodrim).

Content preview: Brian, I recommend the MOMO model: "Prototipo" steering
wheel with a MOMO Lotus horn push. It is a 3-spoke wheel with drilled
holes similar to the Lotus OEM wheel. The hub is a MOMO hub for a
Triumph, MOMO model: 211511.7806 (I still have the box, and I bought the
hub 18 years ago!) I my opinion, it looks very period-correct, but
doesn't have the "unsightly" (IMHO) original protruding Lotus horn
push... but I do covet that Chapman signature steering wheel! Mine was
already gone when I bought my car. [...]

Gentlemen,
I have an 1963 S1 that I am restoring, it is very original, though in a
thousand pieces !
It came with a Lotus timber and aluminium spoke steering wheel. It has
aluminium nipples, for want of a better description, on the reverse
side of the wheel, between the finger grips.
I have been told that this wheel is from a Lotus Cortina, that my wheel
should not have the nipples.
Can anybody confirm or deny this for me.
Many thanks
Jeff

Jeff,
I have Elan S1 #26/134 and it has a steering wheel like yours with
rivets (?) on the back side. I believe it was original equipment.
The later S1 Elans I have use the same steering wheel as the Lotus
Cortinas. Just to confuse things, a late S2 I have came with the same
steering wheel covered in leather. The leather is pretty well
deteriorated so it's just somthing to hang on the wall at this point.
More information than you asked for....

My Elan 1600 - 26/0538 ( I am the origional owner) went on the fab line in Dec 1963, the steering wheel is like yours with rivets thru the backside of the wood rim.
I think you could consider it to be origional Lotus as the Cortina I believe started prduction after that time.
Correct me if I am wrong listers.

To my mind you've just described the standard Elan/Triumph Spitfire
steering column-to-hub conection, and let's face it; it's an ungainly
visual detail on an otherwise brilliant car.
To approximate the original Elan wood wheel, I put a Nardi wood wheel,
with a Spitfire adaptor hub on my S2, and I'm about to stain the dash
to match it. The only problems with this set up are, Nardi stopped
making horn push buttons with individual car logos, and the forward
end of the new hub doesn't exactly align with the column. However,
I've put a Lotus logo decal over the horn push, it looks good to me.
