Gearbox mounting....

PostPost by: paul_adamson » Thu Mar 30, 2006 8:13 pm

Could someone with the Plus 2 parts list look up the part number of the
gearbox cross member?
I want to see if it is the same as the one on the original Elan.

The part number in my service parts list is ... D026 A 0002

Just an idle thought.....

I'm starting to wonder if the two cars had different gearbox cross
members and maybe I've got the wrong one?

My understanding is that there are two different original Elan cross
members. One for close ratio and one for semi-close ratio transmissions.

A 26 A 002 Gearbox Mounting with rally ratio gearbox

D 026 A 0002 Bracket- gearbox mounting

This part number is listed as suitable for all (2 seat) variants - I
can't really see the +2 being any different.

Marc

I don't know about different gear boxes, but the original cross member
was a single piece of metal whereas the later version had a triangulated
section welded on to either side to give it more strength. Sorry I don't
have any part numbers.

It's a ZF close ratio dog leg 1st 5 speed close (top 1:1) ratio
g/box used on a host of 70's rally cars. Capiable of taking 250nm
(~335bhp) It was used on Vegantune elan see link, It was usually
connected to a BDG or similar engine.

I plan to use it on a MK1 eacort with a 2.1 lrt BDG Photos of the
car added last week. I have to finish my elan first

I dropped the engine CR to 10.5:1 and have a set of milder cams its
running on twin 48 dells. I'm hoping.... but probily will not a
practical street car except for maybe a run when I feel the need. I
can't wait to see the faces on a few local honda civic drivers
faces. I had planned to run the motor in my elan but decided not
to butcher that car. The ZF gearbox was quite the find.

Jim, you should be able to get a secondhand bell housing from the Rally
Escort parts suppliers. When I was looking for a BDA to Rocket housing I was
offered a couple of these.
Regards
Steve
