New car

PostPost by: Jens » Thu Aug 03, 2006 7:21 pm

Hi everyone!
I have just bought myself a Lotus Elan +2/130
As the cars are hard to come by when you are
in a hurry (which you shouldnt be buying a veteran
car) i bought the car from UK Sports Cars unseen,
just from photoes and their description.
Have i done something daft!
Well anyway its very exciting to see what arrives, could
be anything - an old tatty Anglia!

I hope i can get some support from this group as i will
most likely need a lot of it in time to come.

rebuilt hot engine etc.
I suppose the standard elan engine has a lot of extra
hidden power.
cheers

Let me get this striaght. You bought an old British car, let alone a Lotus,
sight unseen. Oh, you're gonna need support all right. Mad, you are. Just
mad enough to be part of the group. Welcome aboard.

Bill

Hi Jens!

Good luck with the new car!

The good news is that virtually all parts are available and there are some great sources of information on Elans (not least this forum and the LotusElan.net website).

The bad news is that you probably don't want to read the reviews on this link:
http://www.southrun.co.uk/dealerreviews ... Sportscars

As Bill says, you must be mad buying a Lotus of that age unseen, but insanity is a prerequisite of owning one, so you'll probably be fine!

Enjoy your new car when it reaches you!

Martin

Hi!

Congratulation to a perfekt bay.
I can assure you that these two cars get on very well together. At my place they share a onecar garage since more than five years back in time. There handy size make it possible.
They complement each other.
The speed and handling of the Lotus gives you the kick, and the reliability of the Frogeye makes shure that you always have a car on the road!

Hi Jens
Welcome to the Elan ownership club.
UK sports cars are general Lotus dealers so will not know as much about Plus
2s as us guys on the list. So even if the car is pretty good you will
probably end up doing a few things.

The main problems Elan/plus 2 have are :-

Fouling spark plugs. This is due to the manual stating jetting for the carbs
and spark plugs which are not ideal.

Starter motor jamming. Lotus state a 9 tooth bendix gear but myself and most
others use a 10 tooth one. There are now superb modern type starters that
are worth fitting (when you have ?160)

Engine running hot. Lotus fitted a smaller radiator to the later models.
Most of us fit the earlier full width radiators.

Electrical problems. Being a fibre glass car you always get earthing
problems. It is usually a straight forward job to clean contacts and add
additional earthing cables.

General rough running and miss fires. The Elan/Plus 2 is actually a
reliable car if maintained properly and by people that know what they are
doing. If the carbs and timing are set up correctly and the car regularly
maintained you should have a VERY enjoyable sports car.

A lot of rough running and miss fires are leaks usually on the vacuum side
and also the carb mounting O rings leaking.

Unless you blow up the engine ( Big Bucks) most problems are usually easy
and relatively cheap to fix.

My advice is run the car for a while and get use to it "BEFORE" you start
getting carried away buying lots of new shiny parts for it
The chances of you having a problem not experienced by one us and not being
able to help you is pretty slim.

Enjoy your Lotus
Clive

Thanks Clive,
Just had a llok at your pages and found your parts
very interesting, both the hoses, housing and K&N filter
will be items that i need.
I realy liked that housing, i makes it so easy to
install a better performing radiator.
Cheers
