CV Joint Info Requested

All,
This discussion has convinced me: cv's in place of rotoflex couplings
are the better way to go for all but the most accurate restorations.
Now, has anyone got the details on adapting a set of off the shelf cv's
to an Elan S4 or Plus 2?

We ordered ours from Bean, but I have heard that VW CV 's work. The ones
from Bean were somewhere in the vicinity of $1000 but I think it is worth
it, since the rotoflex couplings add up to nearly $500 and you will have to
replace them at some point ( also no wind-up with CV joints) We did have
trouble installing the CV joints, they did not want to insert into the
differential. Someone gave us a good tip, we put the CV's in the freezer
over night, then heated the diff with a tungsten lamp ( outdoor work light
)-they went right in. Removing them someday may be a whole other story.

I believe the set I bought from "Bean" were adapted VW cv's with shortened
axles and modified half shafts for the diff and adapter plates for the
outboard half shafts. surely a complicated undertaking to design these.

Does anyone know if the Elan's rotoflex couplings are the same as
the couplings for a Hillman Imp? I have a set of four that I picked
up at an autojumble for #10 each.

Ben,
The Imp's are less stiff and durable. Not recommended for the Elan
driven with elan.

Yes the Imp rotoflex couplings are exactly the same as the original elan
couplings, but most people have got use to the couplings used on the Elan
Sprint which are stiffer. I have used both and recommend the sprint
couplings, but you can definitly use the Imp ones, especially for road use
any way.

Having owned both cars I used to run the Lotus steel reinforced rotoflexs
on the Imp that is OK, but the imp also uses rotoflexs without the steel
reinforcement in them these are not as strong. To make matters worse there
are certain rotoflexs on the market that fit the Imp but are not suitable
and I have known them fail within HOURS. Be very careful about what type you
fit a failed rotoflex can cause a lot of damage
