Loss of Oil Pressure

PostPost by: JKING » Thu Jul 01, 1999 5:14 pm

Does anyone else experience a loss of oil pressure during hard braking and
cornering? White knuckle cornering takes on a different meaning in my S1 as
I coast, watching the guage waiting for the pressure to return and wondering
if I should switch off. The oil level has to be right up for this not to
happen. Even a half quart low brings it on. I think I have gotten the
pick-up tube and "funnel" right down on the bottom of the sump.
Also, how does 20 psi sound as adequate pressure at idle when hot using 30W
oil. The guage reads only 10 which did worry me but checking the guage using
a tire pump with an attached guage that I trust, showed me that it reads 10
psi low.

Someone else asked about this also. This is a normal phenomenon but still
unacceptable. For slaloming, I used to run about a 1/2 quart high to avoid it
but then windage is a problem (level gets too close to the spinning crank and
the drag robs horsepower and can foam the oil too

The solution is to baffle the pan and add a windage tray for starters. In
addition, a swing pickup can be used. For race Elans, dry sump is the best way
to go but creative baffling and pickup designs can solve the problem too.

20 at hot idle is fine as long as the pump will take it up to the 30-35 range.

Don't worry this is normal standard Elan behaviour. To fix the problem
requires a substantial amount of work on the sump. Keeping the oil topped
up minimises the problem.

You could also drive like an old lady, but this may not be an acceptable
solution to you.

I shouldn't worry if you are using the Elan only for the road as this is
normal for the twin cam. On slowing after a fast run the oil pressure
frequently drops to (almost) nothing but then picks up again. I've never
known any of mine to idle at 20 when hot, 40psi is the norm under any
circumstances apart from the above mentioned anomaly.
If you are using the car for the track then that is a different matter and
best answered by someone else.

principle of storing oil under pressure in a 1 quart or 3 quart tank (two
sizes, street or racing). This is plumbed into the oil pressure galley on
the engine so that when the pick up tube sucks air then this pressurized
oil keeps the pressure up. When the pump works again then it repressurizes
the tank. This also has the added advantage of being able to supply oil
pressure to the engine before starting. Used one in the late 70's on a G/P
Spitfire and it worked great. Have seen them in ads lately.
