Control Knobs

PostPost by: JKING » Wed Jul 14, 1999 7:03 pm

Does anyone know where to obtain S1 type control knobs? I'm specifically
looking for the heater and wiper knobs. They don't seem to be listed in my
Dave Bean catalog. I don't know if they are the same in later models but
these have a little diagram depicting the function in them behind a
transparent cap.

S1 and S2 knobs were also used on UK Fords of the period, particularly
Consulsand Zephyrs. A company called Obsolete Ford has them -- from memory,
they sell good condition used parts rather than new.

Hope this helps.

Dear J King

I don't know about the S1, but the headlight, and lighter knobs on a SS (s3)
are very similar if not the same as those on a number of Triumph cars (2000 and
2500PI). You could start looking there if there are any in tour area.
Probably hard to find in the USA.

These have been very difficult to obtain for many years now. May have been
sourced from early Cortina, but best bet is to inquire with used Lotus
dealers such as Wire Wheel Classic Sports Cars in FL 561-595-3000. Also
contact usual new parts suppliers in case something has turned up. I
obtained a NOS headlamps knob from JAE a couple of years ago. The control
knobs you mention were used on all Elans and Europas S2 - Special.

I found the heater knob at Wirewheel as per Randall's reply. David

Try looking at the early Ford Anglia. I believe some of their knobs
are the same as the early Elan/ Europa.

Christopher Neil and Paul Matty in the UK used to have nice catalogs of things
like this before Lotus began threatening to sue (even though most of it was
not available from the factory any more). I don't know about the present
status of UK-based repro items or old stock (particularly Lucas used on
non-Lotus cars as well). Mike Causer?

I think he was talking about the S1-S2 knobs which are different from the

Correct, Rod. I haven't seen the S1 type knobs on later Elans. Haven't
checked Europas. I'll give Randall's Fla source a try anyway, though.
Thanks, Randall.

OK let's clear this up. From my experience and from photos in books, S1-S3
Elans had same knobs: heater, choke, wipers and headlamp lift were all one
style (Ford Anglia?). On S4 Elans the choke and heater controls were
replaced with a different style but retained same wiper and headlamp knobs.

Europas S2 - TC also used these same knobs for wiper, heater and choke,
except Federal S2 had different choke control. The S1 just had the wiper
knob.

Sorry Randall, upon closer inspection, I agree with you. To tell you the
truth, I thought everything was different on the S4 Elans (of all the Elans
I've had over the years, I've never had a S4) and have never noticed the
Europa similarities either. I've certainly looked at all the dashes involved
but all I "saw" were rocker switches.

Your more specific overview will indeed clear it up.

The knobs in question used to be available from a company in UK called Old
Ford Spares Service. They were either NOS or good quality used; I can't
remember which as it's a few years since I bought them. The price in 1991
for wiper and light switch knobs was ?3.00 each

On the subject of knobs, the S1 has a different choke knob to the later
models -- it's big, black and doesn't have any symbol on it. It can be seen
quite clearly in early photos -- perhaps the Jim Clark car with the leather
dash?

Hope this helps. Hope the company is still around!
