windshield molding

PostPost by: daves56 » Wed Aug 25, 1999 9:03 pm

I have a 69 Elan +2 project car. The windscreen was with the car but not
installed. It was cracked and had come loose about ten years before. So
I bought a new windshield from Dave Bean about a month ago. It arrived
in one piece and appears to be correct, it matches the old one. The
problem is that the windscreen is larger than the opening in the body.
The windscreen is about 1/16" larger top-to-bottom and 1" larger left to
right. No way is this going to fit using the standard molding. I talked
to the folks at Dave Bean and unfortunately their only suggestion was
that I might have to get creative and to call around to the various
windshield shops. Well boys and girls, Hank Hill is alive and well and
living in North Texas. I don't want to go through that experience again.

What I think I need is a strip (about 14 ft) of "offset" rubber
windscreen molding. The offset needs to be about 3/8" or larger. JC
Whitney carries something like this but not quite.

Any suggestions, ideas or names of companies that sell molding?. Thanks.

Steele Rubber has a wide variety of windshield trims you might luck
out with something they have.

Re +2 windscreen moulding

Have you compared the new screen to the old one I believe that
there are two screens as there are definitley two different methods
of installation.
Early =2's the screen was fitted with traditional rubber moulding but
later cars had the screens bonded-in. It is this bonded-in type of
screen that has the plastic/chrome full width moulding which is I
understand impossible to get now.I finished my bonded-in screen
by cutting an old style moulding into a T piece and eurothane in
position.
So logic suggests that if the hole is the same then the screen
must vary depending on method of fixing. Factory manual suggests
that all "S" models had the bonded-in method, so if your car is not
an S model you possibly have the wrong screen.
Hope this helps

My 1970 +2S has a rubber moulding with the wide chromed metal strip with a
"T" shaped section which fits into the moulding.

Heading for Brussles/Salzburg next week in the 1999 Euroclassic.

I have a Sept 1969 +2S, chassis no 50/1821, and the windscreen is not bonded
in. The screen rubber has a sort of "T" section, to accept the plastic
covered "chrome" finishing strip. I'm no expert, but the previous ideas that
the bonded screen and the non-bonded are a slightly different size sound
like the answer to your problem.
