More photos from Elan S2 rebuild -

PostPost by: garyeanderson » Sun Dec 10, 2000 12:07 pm

I put some more photos of the rebuild of my S2. This was a project
that I always wanted to do, it took about 18 months and a lot of
money. I stoped counting at $20 grand but the bills didn't. This Elan
is all grins with earplugs in. With a completed weight of 1280 Lbs.
including a couple gallons of gas and 153 bhp. and 133 lb/ft torque
(engine dyno) it moves out smartly. The engine has a 77.6 mm stroke
and 83.5 mm bore for 1700 cc displacment. The connecting rods are
from a nissan 1600/1800 and are 133 mm long (about 5.24 inches) and
this pushes the piston pin up (1.45 pin hight) a bit in the 1600
block. The head has D production sized valves and cams are .420 lift
with 250 degrees duration at .050 lift. This engine is not very happy
in the 1500 rpm range but it gets up and moves when you mash the gas
pedal. I wouldn't recommend this configuration to any one unless you
had another to drive an a regular basis. I took it out about 4 times
this year, where as I just stopped driving the S4 Thursday due to the
salt storm (1 inch of snow and a quarter inch of salt). I don't think
I will ever sell the S2 though, its your basic E-ticket ride without
waiting in line.

How did you get the car so light? I have removed the door frames (S3) and
window glass, put in an aluminum radiator, removed the soft top and the
heater and my car weighs 1440lbs with a few gallons of gas. the only thing
that could have added weight is the cv's and the roll bar, but not much. I
too have a Supertrapp exhaust-loud pipes save lives! I love it but it but my
car is open so it probably doesn't ring the ears the way your hard top does.
We met at British car day this summer, the dark blue Elan. I live in Boston,
are you near?

Some of the photos were taken at home and others were take at my
shop, all the body work and painting were at my shop and I assemble
them at home.

The 1280 is an estimate, it weighed 1260 without the bonnet, spare
tire, tools and with 2 or 3 gallons of fuel. I wrote this up before
in egroups, but the gist of the matter is there is nothing in the car
that isn't needed to pass Massachusetts inspection. The boby started
out pretty clean so it received no bondo or other filler, only a
couple coats of primer/filler of which most got sanded off.
The transmision has alloy bellhousing, case, and tailshaft which
saves 30 lbs. It also has an aluminum flywheel, another 12+ lbs. The
Panasports are 9.5 lbs each. All fasteners are of AN type.
The only sound deadener left in the car is a coat of black basecoat
paint. I also have the supertrap and Dave Bean CV kit which is pretty
heavy. I still want to drop a few more pounds by swaping out the
headlight buckets with 5.5 inch headlamps under plexiglass covers.

Gary,

I have some NOS 5 1/4 LUCAS headlight buckets I bought just for this purpose on my 45/26R. I bought about a dozen, so I have a few for sale. Only problem with them is they are wired for high beam only, but the connector is the same three prong, just needs the blue wire w/ red tracer added.

Morgan:
How do you anchor the door latches if you have removed
the door frames? I'm trying not to modify the original
window frames, but I still want to have functional
latches.
