Oopps,

The hints of a previous badge indent are on the nearside.

RHD.

Regards,
Stuart.

My May 72 car has a Sprint badge on one side and a World Champ's badge on the other side, I think there are two versions of the Champs badge, they kept on winning and adding years!

Edit: I was wrong- there are three versions of the "champs" badge.

James,
I did recall correctly, the recommended gap between flat coils of the Thackeray washers is 0.040". There is no magic to this just patience. My one trick is to use a small mirror (much like a dentist's tool) to see what you are doing on the washers at the bottom of the carburettor bodies. A wire thickness gauge is most convenient. Don't wait too long to get the work shop manual and service parts lists as these are extremely helpful (up to the point that you find the errors in them). I actually bought the manuals before I bought my +2 as a way of learning what I should watch for.

On the Sprint, the World Champions Constructors badge, reflecting Lotus championships up to 1970, was fixed to the right hand front wing. A redesigned badge, reflecting the 1972 World Championship, was also produced. Since that was won (at Monza) in September of that year, it may be that these badges appeared on Sprints produced from mid October 1972 onwards. The 1973 World Championship badge would only have been used on the Plus 2S 130.

The Lotus Elan Sprint badge was fixed to the left hand front wing. In the case of the handful of Sprint/5s produced at the factory, a Sprint/5 badge replaced the Lotus Elan Sprint badge. The only badges to the rear of the car were the Lotus letters on the boot lid! And the only other badge of course, was the nose badge.

Thanks Brian.

Probably had to use up stock so maybe the 1972 badges never made it onto Sprints. Perhaps the last few?

I see also that an S3 that Paul Matty describes as having been fully restored by themselves doesn't have repeaters either, so maybe Matty has a thing against them! 8)

I could be wrong but as I understand it the side repeaters (top of fender) were first fitted to S2 SE cars and not to Standard S2's then they they were fitted on S3 SE cars and not on S3 standard cars. I am refering to the domestic cars and not export cars.

My 68 S4 Elan was a standard specification domestic UK delivered car and as far as I can tell never had the repeaters on the wings either. Did not have them when I bought it in 75 and no sign of any holes in the body where they might have been when it was repainted in 1981.

cheers

I'll tred lightly into this one, ha. Badging on Elans is inconsistant at best. It falls under the what's on the shelf rule, and maybe even checking those half finished hulks placed outside the factory to impress the bank(s). We will never make complete sense of it because it's not a German car. God Bless Elans.
The USA Elans did not have repeaters.... that's not to say that a few intended perhaps, for the Netherlands ended up here due to coffee shop confusion. Did Continental Elans have repeaters?

My standard UK edition S3 has no repeaters, I was under the impression that repeaters were only on the SE's.

There's a little bell ringing that says you guys are absolutely right...only the S/E had the repeaters. Just looked at the price list for the S/E options which doesn't mention the repeaters, but it also doesn't mention the chrome trim on the sill, which I believe was also S/E only.

Tim

and the Europa,of course.

my recently aquired late model sprint has the '72 badge.
I'd have thought they would need time to tool up and order badges.
