It took long enough

When i bought my car 39 years ago, the jack was not in the car. The PO promised to ship it to me, and never did.
At the LOG last week, I was talking to a former Elan owner who mentioned that he had a jack to sell. A (very nice!) deal was done, and it arrived today. The ratchet is pretty knackered, but I think those can be had.
Question, the small knurled knob on the end seems to be loose/could fall off. Is this normal? How is it held on?

Pretty sure they?re meant to be like that though I?ve no idea why certainly the few I?ve handled over the years are the same.
Well done the last one of those that sold on eBay over here I think went for over ?800.

If you mean the castellated cup washer, it is loose on the shaft and retained only by a spring clip washer. My Elan jack appears to have two of them but I don't know if that's typical as another similar Metallifacture jack I have only has one.

Roger, thanks for the photos and information, just what I was looking for. I can source one of those retainers at work.

The castellated washer was always convenient to finger snug-up the mechanism before getting to the real business of cranking it with the wrench. I don't know if that's what it is for, but it felt right. Bummer I no longer have one of these jacks.
