Well once again, you are getting old, or at least I am, and as soon as you think you know a little something, you realize you should never, ever, stop learning!!!

On a Series 1 Elan as depicted in the the photo, what determined whether the vehicle received two rear lights per side or three rear lights per side? I have always wondered why!

Two different sets of lamps existed:

3 per side: US market (possibly plus a few other LHD markets) comprising indicator, position/brake and a reflector.

2 per side: all other markets (indicator / combined brake/position lamp).
1965 Lotus Elan S2 26/4022 (originally Dutchess Lotus East, PA and NJ Area, USA)
