Rough budget for engine rebuild in USA

First, thanks for all of the information and help as I do some background research here. Very much appreciate the responses.

One car I am looking at will need an engine refresh. Nothing traumatic happened to it, it is just tired.

Assuming the block and head are usable what would be a rough working budget for a rebuild to a reliable, not race, spec?

I?m reasonably handy with a wrench, wondering if after getting the crank and block and head professionally inspected how feasible it would be for me to reassemble the engine?

If I do need a shop to help is Dave Bean the go-to on this or are their other shops I should be aware of? I am in Southern California.

Thanks!

Dave Bean is not a shop, that I'm aware of, but Ken Gray there can certainly make good
recommendations

Ah, thought they did rebuilds. I?ll ring them on Monday.

Any other shops come to mind gentlemen?

I would contact Tony Ingram at Lotus7.com. Probably more on the performance end of things for the twincam but he also probably knows others he might recommend. A true gentleman and expert.

I?ll second Using Tony Ingram. I had him diagnose and rebuild my twin cam that sat idle for 20 years. I also had the luxury of living nearby and being able to observe the work as it progressed. I?m rebuilding my Stromberg fitted ?69 S4 FHC as a daily driver, but had him add some modern upgrades (removable front cover) I also purchased my CV driveshafts and suspension parts from him. Tony is an absolute perfectionist and a wellspring of information. His shop is immaculate and he approaches his work like a surgeon. Don?t look any further than Tony. http://lotus7.com/Home.html

I second Bill Schlossnagel. He got mine going - it was very sad after 40,000 hard, put-away-wet miles but nothing had blown up - and its been running (leaking) great for the last 10+ years

Thanks Mike. I just got off the phone with him and he could not have been any more helpful.

Great-let me finalize getting a car and then get it running. We should meet for breakfast and then get some driving in!
