Elan S2 - first start up after a long time

PostPost by: PaulH » Fri Sep 06, 2019 11:58 pm

Just uploaded a video of my Elan S2. This time showing the starting of the engine after many years. Before and after tuning the carbs.

Paul,

Sounds great. One comment though - I had the same sound that happens at 1:31 when I started up my rebuilt engine for the first time, however mine seems to recur every 30 seconds or so at idle. I haven't run the engine at idle for more than a few minutes though, it sounds absolutely horrendous - any idea what causes it?

I hope so. I'll keep you posted.

Do you mean the squealing noise? I'm as certain as I can be that it was the generator (dynamo) belt slipping, probably because the generator was working hard. I've deliberately set the tension on the belt as low as possible so as to put the minimum force on the water pump bearing. I haven't heard it slipping again.

Apparently belt grip improves when engine heats up.
So the advice is to set tension only tight enough to avoid initial squeal.
Not sure what changes but if it works . . .

Well your attention to detail during the rebuild sure shows, Paul. What a lovely car.

I had a bit of a start when I saw your car; mine has been off the road equally long, is not quite ready, and has been painted the same color as yours! I would like to caution you about having the door half shut and the exhaust pointed inward (CO)!! Congratulations, I hope I can do as well!
We are supposed to be having fun, are we not?

Thanks for the comments and your concern about CO poisoning. I have a door at the back of the garage which was open when starting the engine so there was plenty of air flow through the garage (you can see it briefly at the beginning of the video).

I hope putting your car together is bring you as much pleasure as it does for me :D

Hi Paul

I was very interested to see how the door inners go together - your latest film which is not yet in cinemas across the country ;-)

This is really invaluable to folks like myself who have less than half a basket case to start with !

I building a GTS car and although I will not go for the full originality complete with rechromed ashtrays, seeing a video of the real thing is really very useful.
