Elan S1 1964

1964 S1 , chassis 26/3606.

Originally delivered to Switzerland (Andy from Lotus Cars confirmed this), first registered there in May 1967,
imported to Germany in 1971. Last owner bought the car in 1973 and put it off the street in 1977.
Last owner had the car stored in a rented industrial building (with more cars from him and his brother), when suddenly they were called asking why they had not moved the cars. The demolition of the building already had started. So all the cars had to be moved in one afternoon, and in this process the engine and the gearbox went missing.

Sate of the car:
Sad. Without engine, no gearbox, no steering wheel and one seat only.
Body widened, with a roll bar fitted, scratches, paint not original. In need of repair.
Non original instruments.
German papers.

Reason for selling:
I am quite unsure if I am fit for the task. I am getting older and lot of work to be done ... :(
The eldest son is euphoric, but we both have less time available as some years ago, and I calculated that at this speed we need 5 years to start seeing some light ... or a lot of cash ...

Price:
Rather selling I would prefer change it for a LHD Coupe, ideally a S3.
Of course value would be compensated.

Location:
Currently the car is in Tarragona (Spain), for cleaning.

Pictures:
Later this week.

Yes, indeed.
I would like to add that the Weber head, valve cover & carburators are present.

I started cleaning the car, but it also started raining ... cleaned enough to see the car is not brown, but white :-)

Well at least some decisions have been made for you. You've probably heard people that say if you restore the car it's worth less. I don't think that's the case here. You're in luck, it needs to be restored. It's only money, time and labor, and lots of each. But I have one that's much worse. I'll trade you?

And people say you can't find an elan anymore for less than $15,000. Rubbish! They are out there.

Glad you saved it.

Frank

Hi all,
rather than using the PM service I would prefer you contact me by email through gherlt(at)yahoo dot es.
It is much easier and I dont have to export/delete/move old PMs ...
Thanks.

Hello,
the response that this car has generated is quite high, in quite 36 hours there are quite a lot of "very keen" buyers.
At a final stage the car will have to go, but please remember my first post:

"Rather selling I would prefer change it for a LHD Coupe, ideally a S3. "

I have two offers with cars exchange, for me those have preference as with money in hand I have to search cars again. And although - as Frank said - there are cars out there, finding a good one for reasonable price needs time. Those cars offered would not have been on the market without this exchange offer.

So, in short: exchange has preference over selling.
And: if the Coupe offered is in very good condition, value will be compensated...up to a reasonable price.
Inspecting the offered cars needs time, so please, do not expect a decision this Friday ...

And Saturday I am off for holidays and basically, I need them !
Meanwhile, feel free to ask for details or pictures of details.

Thanks you

Guillermo

As requested, more details on the papers:
I do have a German "Kfz-Brief". It states the previous two German owners. It does not indicate who or how many owners it had in Switzerland, is also does not bear my name. In Germany the possesion of this paper equals possesion of the car. Of course, I do have a purchase contract with the PO, who is the last owner in the papers.

Exact dates stated in the papers:
First registered 29.5.1967
Imported to Germany 22.7.1971
Registered in Germany 22.8.1972
Put off street 31.08.1972
Put on street 30.04.1973
SOLD to new owner 30.04.1973
Put off street 30.09.1973
Put on street 12.07.1974 - Put off street 14.11.1974
Put on street 26.08.1975 - put off street 10.12.1975
Put on street 9.12.1976 - put off street 18.08.1977 ...
(In Germany, when a car is put off street, you do not pay taxes nor insurance.)

Also states that the widening of the mudguards was done in 1975
And finally, the stamped engine number of the cylinder head matches that of the papers.

The PO stated that he bought the car from Auto Becker, a quite famous luxury car dealer.
The papers contain a small error, indicating "Elan S4" as model.

Elan S1 sadly minus some parts!
Do you have any photos?
Could you scan the car docs and chassis plate?
Is it LHD?
What is your asking price?
I am in Mallorca and looking for an S1 / S2 to restore.

Hi,
as some predicted, it is difficult to match a swap, so it is up for direct sale now.
My asking price is 16.000 EUR or best offer.
If your want offer a bit more, your are welcome :-)
If you leave bits behind, also welcome :-)

The car is in Tarragona, Spain.
