Original Series 4 SE DHC FS in Chesire

I have no connection to this but happened across the advert by the by:

It appears to be a very nice S4 SE DHC in very original condition, low mileage and a pleasant patina. However, I am always wary when adverts fail to show any photographs of the engine bay. What are they hiding?!

Well that makes me sick.. after spending £16k on a restoration project that will likely end up costing me more than the £24k they are asking, but - hey ho - them's the breaks. At least I'll know mine'll be done right (within the limits of my capabilities at least)!

I'd like to see the engine bay, too. Aren't SUs taller than Strommies? In which case, how did they get them to fit?

The recommissioning work done must have been pretty minimal if they are going to make any profit..

I can't imagine why replacing factory fitted Stromberg's with SU's would be considered an upgrade.

I've heard that SUs are easier to tune with bigger selection of Jets /Needles etc.
I know someone who used to race a 105E Anglia with Lotus Engine. He had fitted SUs.
Someone else with a TR6 and he changed the Stroms for SUs because he said easier for him.

Hard to tell really from a limited set of photos, but if it really is a good S4 it’s suspiciously cheap compared to many similar cars advertised on other web sites. On the other hand, as far as I know Adam Sykes and co tend to specialise mainly in historic and classic race cars, particularly single seaters (I bought my 1973 Dulon Formula Ford through Damon Milnes about 15 years ago). So perhaps it’s simply a car they’re trying to move on as it’s not really their thing, who knows?

I am looking closely at the pictures, and I see Firestone HS-1 tires, which you could see on these cars regularly in the 1970s but which I have not seen in decades. I would look for a datecode on the tires to see how old they are. Is it riding on 40 year old tires? If it really is riding on a set of original old tires from the 1970s, then it was pulled out of long term storage, and cleaned, and that would put the asking price into perspective as a very fair number based on the clean original condition. What work has or has not been done in the last bunch of decades would likely determine what the asking price should be, as it will determine what needs to be done prior to a long drive. It looks like a nice clean survivor car and in the absence of evidence to the contrary I would think it is fair to assume quite a bit of work will be needed to make it reliable and trustworthy for long trips. comparing this with a new restoration is not how I would approach it. I do like the car!

Tim,
Why on earth would you want to swap Strombergs for SU carburettors? All sorts of issues giving that engine a tune no doubt. Certainly no baseline in the manuals for doing that.

And it would be easy enough to swap back to Strombies. Its a non issue, surely?
