Scott,

Please elaborate on the "bolt head trimming" issue. Thanks.

Hi Frank, and thanks for looking.

Part of the head of the bolt(s) that attaches the lower A-arms to the hub carrier sometimes interferes with the wheel just were it arcs to form the bead mount surface, and the bolt(s) have to be ground a bit to allow the wheel to clear. Sometimes it's just one. The arc of the wheel is such that there isn't quite enough clearance on some installations, although the later cars don't always have to do this at all from what I understand, perhaps others can specify.

The bolt head is ground/filed so that it takes off a bit of the corner of one flat of the head. It's hard to imagine, but easy to see once you fit them up.

I did it for both front and rear bolts, but there was still an interference issue with the A-arm on my S1. An expensive trial fit-up for me to say the least.

Scott,

My Elan has knock offs. I'm thinking in terms of wheels for my Europa Special. Can you tell me what the width of the wheels is and do you know if they will bolt straight on to the Europa?

Frank:

Looks like they're good for the Europa too. From Ray's website:

Panasport Alloy Wheels
13" x 5" wheels for Lotus Elan bolt-on hubs
Light-weight alloy wheels with an offset of 25mm makes them compatible with the early Elan and Europa. Weighing only @ 9.5 lb. each, these wheels are manufactured to very strict tolerances so they run very true. (25mm offset = back space @ 3.9", bolt circle dimension 4 x 3.75")

Scott,

I guess the key word here is "early". Mine is a Special for which Lotus furnished 5-1/2" wheels. I have the 5-1/2" factory alloys. I guess it wouldn't make sense to go to the 5" Pansports. Thanks for the information though. Best of luck with your sale.
