Looking at the bid history, there were just two bidders ping ponging each other. Poor tactics.

Just shows to go, if you bid, wait until the bitter end and bid your max. You might get the item at a bargain, at your max price, or be outbid. In any case, you don't get whipsawed. And if you can't be around at the end of the auction, use AuctionSniper or other sniping service to place your bid.

The Lotus Cortina / Mk 1 Escort market has to be the bubble to burst over the coming months. Prices for parts has gone barking mad in some areas...a new grille for an Escort for £700....same as any of the millions of grilles made for Escorts! An air filter box for a Mk 2 Lotus Cortina....over £1000. And here on eBay, a REPLICA Escort Twincam. Only £42k !!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MK1-FORD-ESCORT-M ... 7C294%3A50

These silly prices have only developed over the past 3 or 4 years. Prior to that, they were quite sensible. I seem to remember in 1989 the price of Astons, Ferarris and E Types went mad, but by 1991 they were back to normal...and less.

... and zero bids (for now at least), so mainly a deluded seller rather than an insane market. But it only takes a single insane buyer to make everyone else think it's real.

Guy's,

Chapman steering wheels going for 3-4-500 pounds is it just the Cortina/Escort crowd?? I have bid what I thought was better than fair prices for some Elan parts on Ebay but invariably get out bid to the point that if I can buy new I will.

Regarding Chapman steering wheels I would really like to getone for my S3 DHC so I have two questions, firstly is there anyone out there that would like to sell me one (please PM) second question is what do you all think about the notion of getting some made and having the signature engraved/stamped on?? suggest that on the underside it would be stamped "replica"

OK so I am now ducking for cover.........................

Tony (thank god I am so far away)

I wouldn't have a problem with a Chapman wheel being reproduced, but I'd prefer it to be as original withouit 'repro' stamped in!

Are you sure you need a Chapman wheel? Only the late S3 cars had them. My (May 67) SE has the leather rimmed wheel that looks like a woodrim...but with a leather cover...if you see what I mean.

And the idea to have signature wheels re-produced has been discussed on here before. As I recall, it was felt that they would turn out to be just as expensive as they are now, secondhand.

Up to 500 GBP wow!
The fully restored wheel from my S4 hangs on the wall of my living room (no wife to nag about that).
Thanks for topping up the feel good factor. :)

(I sold one with original plastic covered rim but minus centre boss for 150 GBP at Stonliegh, to a dealer, about 4 years ago & felt quite pleased with that)

Sits back & awaits "Pervy!!" remarks

I really believe that the tatty backplate for over £400 is a con. No one in their right mind would pay that much. Mind you - I said that about the £580 paid for a Cortina steering wheel last year.
I tend to agree with most of the comments that the word "Cortina" seems to be the magic formulae.

I bought a backplate in that sort of condition complete with a tatty air box for £42 a year ago. I have to admit that I did expect to pay twice that, but would not have gone above £100.

Peter,

No I do not have the orginal wheel, the one I have is an after market thing of about 13" in diameter, pile of rubbish actually, I will get a wheel eventually but I figure that if I am going to pay serious money I may as well get what I want.

I like to look of the Chapman wheel and if I can get one without the signature I would be happy with that, my original point though is that people are prepared (or were) to pay what I thought was OTT for a steering wheel with a signature engraved/stamped on it, it is not as if Colin Chapman engraved them himself.........................

Regards,

Tony

Rumour has it that the Signature was written by Chapman's Secretary

That's a ridiculous price - if it had been labelled a Weber backplate for an Elan it would have gone for £70 or £80 which is still a lot for a rusty one!

I was going to replace my original Weber backplate as there was some damage at the bottom corner - but after seeing the prices on Ebay I spent yesterday doing a fibreglass repair to the damaged area which will not bee seen anyway. A lick of black hammerite and it should look as good as new.
